The Dream of a Reconstructed Fort Becomes a Reality
As schoolkids step off the bus and teachers guide their students into Fort Mose Historic State Park, the same curious question echoes every time: “Where’s the fort?” It’s a natural inquiry—and one that will soon have a thrilling answer.
After decades of tireless advocacy, the dream of reconstructing Fort Mose is finally becoming a reality. Since the fort’s discovery in the early 1980s, archaeologists, researchers, and members of the Fort Mose Historical Society have worked passionately to piece together its rich history. The story of Fort Mose—a sanctuary for freedom seekers and a testament to courage—has been shared through educational exhibits, museum displays, and immersive reenactments during signature events like Flight to Freedom, Battle of Bloody Mose, Courageous Women of Fort Mose, and more.
Yet, despite the vibrant storytelling, visitors have long had to rely on their imagination to picture the fort, as no physical structure existed at the park. That’s all about to change. Thanks to years of fundraising, grant applications, and the dedication of organizations like the Florida State Parks Foundation and the Fort Mose Historical Society, approximately $3 million has been secured to bring the fort back to life.
The groundbreaking ceremony on January 19, 2024, marked the beginning of this historic endeavor. Since then, land has been cleared, the outline of the fort has been drawn, and the structure has begun to take shape. When completed in mid-2025, the reconstructed fort will rise nearly 39 feet high, offering a tangible glimpse into the lives and bravery of the Fort Mose community. Visitors will soon be able to explore the fort and fully immerse themselves in the spirit of the park.
By 2025, the recurring question of “Where is the fort?” will no longer echo through the park. Instead, visitors will stand in awe of the structure that honors the legacy of Fort Mose’s freedom seekers.
